30° – Visualising Ocean Data

An abstract foundation for specific knowledge

Covering 71% of the Earth’s surface, water is an important part of the global ecosystem. Every development and change in the sea also affects life on earth. Datasets help us to understand conditions and ecological processes such as changes in salinity or temperature. Scientists of various disciplines have spent the last 100 years gathering information in order to analyse and discover relations between different sets of data.

30° is a visualization of marine data in the form of an installation. It allows the viewer to explore and enter into a dialogue with the analysis of large quantities of data on an aesthetic as well as a spatial level. Datasets help us to understand conditions and ecological processes which allow predictions about the future of the oceans. In this way, they directly influence political, economical and social decision making processes on a global scale. 30° hopes to draw attention to scientific efforts of gaining a better understanding of the sea in order to preserve the world’s oceans. The measured data originates from the 30th longitude and is printed in chronological order in small typography on three translucent surfaces. Projected animations make the dataset visually readable. The installation was published and exhibited at various occasions to make it accessible to a wider public.
