Schulgeschichte:n

Who was allowed to go to school, and who wasn’t? What was taught and what does one’s personal dream school look like?

The permanent exhibition »school history« in the historical spaces of the Museum of Cultural History Magdeburg explores these questions. It provides insights into the development of schools over the last 200 years with a focus on Magdeburg. Visitors are invited to exchange personal experiences in various areas and to imagine the schools of tomorrow.

The design in the space and in the graphics is based on a design grid inspired by lines and boxes from exercise books, on which modules and content are arranged. The atmosphere of a vibrant schoolyard provides the inspiration for moments of exchange. On the one hand, this subtly reflects the regulated structures in which pupils still move around today, and on the other hand, school may be experienced as a lively and inspiring place. The boxes are visible as patterns on the modules and the »exercise book lines« as orange round tubes on the walls and in the room, which structure the entire exhibition. In the last room, this is dissolved at the oval and interactive »dream school table«, playfully offering a glimpse into possible futures. An interplay of blue tones creates thematic areas with a modern, inviting and timeless aesthetic.

Interactive formats such as a digital object station, where visitors can play with information on exhibited objects by correctly connecting them, make it possible to experience content on different levels. From a large-format projected slideshow with insights into the museum’s extensive collection, to biographies with explanatory illustrations and an audio station, to an interactive map table on which visitors can plot their own route to school, there are various approaches and levels for immersing yourself in »school history and stories«.
