Bibliothek der Zukunft / SN#2, part 2
For the second part of the project, the library of the future (BDZ) / Sculpture Natale #2 (SN#2) travelled from Hamburg to the small shipyard »l’esclain« next to the river Loire in Nantes to continue the working and researching process.
During the two-week residency, the work on the topics of »common (water) spaces«, »exchange of knowledge« and »accueil – welcoming guests« continued in different artistic ways in relation to the site and its historical context. The old shipyard and its neighbourhood are in a transformative process of restructuring and gentrification. In between construction side noise, the daily work routine of the shipyard and arising touristic attractions around the corner, we have created our own »snapshot« of the current situation on site using different methods and approaches.
As part of the residency, »trace(s)« of the space and the changes it is going through have been collected and mapped by using the method »cyanotype«. The resulting images, as a serial sequence, create a feeling for the transformation process at the shipyard.
(The recording locations and the objects, whose traces have been collected, have been documented in a map and the archive-list.)
At the end of our stay, we opened the doors of our work space under the title »ON EST LA« and presented results and work status, as well as the »library of the future« program from the past summer in Hamburg to the public in various formats (reading, prints, stamp-action, concert, video). The trace(s) research was expanded in form of a participative workshop open to all during the open studio days. In addition to the different formats that took place, our focus was also on exchanging ideas with the guests on the various topics.
The project was developed and implemented together with the collectif mit, ftts Kultur and the ARCHIPEL in Hamburg. It is part of the nomadic residence »Sculpture Navale« and has developed as an international project with the locations and work locations in Hamburg and Nantes. The cosmopolitan composition and multilingualism of the teams also enable a wide variety of cultural exchanges, offering new perspectives on how European cities are set up with regard to their relationship with water.
