Into the Trees
The special exhibition “Into The Trees” at the Günter Grass House in Lübeck spans the period from today back to the 1980s. Grass addressed the apocalyptic mood of the decade in his novel “Die Rättin” (The Rat). “Into the Trees” takes up the theme of the novel and interweaves it with the significance of the forest in the work of the writer, painter, and sculptor Günter Grass, for whom the loss of the forest meant above all a loss of culture. It also asks what relationship we ourselves have today with the forest, which has become an important place for many, especially in the pandemic period that has just passed.
The exhibition scenography weaves together texts, images, drawings, sculptures, audio and film sequences in a way that allows visitors to immerse themselves in the forest and Grass’s multifaceted work. On the displays (metal grids) floating freely in the room, visitors can discover the “intact forest” on one side and the human-destroyed forest on the other. A bright, round clearing invites visitors to linger. The interactive seating element features the audio track for the film shown next to it with Volker Schlöndorf, as well as poems and text fragments by Günter Grass. An analog paper book in the clearing and QR codes in the exhibition space allow visitors to explore more in-depth content.
