Reading in the moor
The design concept “Reading in the moor” for the refurbishment of the Rahlstedt district library creates a welcoming destination with a variety of atmospheres for reading, learning and spending time.
The colour and material palette draws inspiration from the surrounding nature reserves of the district. Accordingly, shades of green dominate the ground floor, structuring the 400 sqm open-plan space into distinct zones. The open and inviting entrance area, incorporating the service desk and the “Library of Things”, leads into the children’s area with its tiered platform landscape. On the 150 sqm first floor, the colour scheme shifts to warm reds and browns, complemented by green accents. In addition to generous workspaces, this level accommodates an extensive magazine collection and the young adult section. Along the expansive window frontage on both floors, a continuous bench integrates a variety of functions and seating options. A stairwell framed with translucent textiles leads to the upper level, creating a distinctive spatial experience and subtly separating the different work areas upstairs.
Harmonious colours, durable materials and sustainable solutions: from Cradle-to-Cradle-certified carpet tiles to elements made from recycled plastic, the material selection was guided by a commitment to design quality, longevity and resource conservation.
